Russia Unleashes Deadly Strikes On Cities Across Ukraine After Crimea Bridge Attack

Russia unleashed a barrage of deadly attacks on cities across Ukraine on Monday, hitting the heart of the country's capital as part of a wave of strikes against civilians and infrastructure not seen since the very earliest days of the war.

From Lviv in the west to Kharkiv in the northeast, missiles tore through rush hour traffic and into energy facilities, in retaliation for a blast that damaged a key bridge to the annexed Crimean Peninsula over the weekend.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced in a televised address that his military had launched a "massive strike" on Ukraine's "energy, military command and communications facilities," telling his security council it was revenge for what he called Kyiv's long track record of "terrorist" actions, including the bridge blast.

Five October Surprises That Shook Recent US Elections

The Georgia Senate race was shaken earlier this week when a report emerged alleging that GOP candidate Herschel Walker, a staunch abortion opponent, paid a woman to terminate her pregnancy in 2009.

Though Walker denies the report, the punches keep coming — from his son Christian Walker calling him out for allegedly lying about the incident to the follow-up report that the woman was the mother of one of Walker’s children.

While it remains to be seen what impact the revelations have on Walker’s chances in the Senate, the scandal joins a long list of so-called October surprises that have historically upended elections in their final weeks.

Here are five of the biggest October surprises of the last few decades.

2022 Is Not Another 'Year Of The Woman'

In the last midterm elections, Democratic women won a historic number of congressional races. Two years later, the GOP had its own “Year of the Woman.” But now that the 2022 primaries are long over, we can say that any signs that Republican women would continue to gain on their Democratic counterparts were likely a flash in the pan, not a watershed.

FiveThirtyEight, with an assist from political scientists Bernard Fraga and Hunter Rendleman, collected a trove of demographic and political information (such as endorsements, race and ethnicity and gender) for every major-party candidate running in a Senate, House and governor’s race this cycle. Based on our analysis of this data, the share of women running for office this November is lower than it was in 2020 (with one type of office serving as a notable exception). Both parties have passed on opportunities to add more women to their ranks. But Democrats have provided more opportunities for female politicians than Republicans — thanks in part to divisions in the GOP’s infrastructure for electing women.

Two Americas Index: Must Be Fraud

Nearly four out of 10 Republicans and one in four Democrats say they'll blame election fraud if their party doesn't win control of Congress in November, in the latest wave of the Axios-Ipsos Two Americas Index.

A month out from the 2022 midterms, 2020's Big Lie is alive and morphing into a broader distrust of institutions and elections that threatens to become entrenched.

Republicans surveyed are significantly more likely than Democrats not only to predict that election fraud will play some role if their party loses, but to feel that suspicion intensely.

Columbus Day – October 10, 2022

Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday celebrated on October 10 commemorating the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492. Over the last few decades however, this celebration has faced serious controversy due to Christopher Columbus’ various horrific acts against Native Americans throughout his life as an explorer.

Because of this, many places in California, New York, Minnesota, Colorado, and more have transformed this holiday into Indigenous People’s Day. This day no longer has to be a painful reminder, but a positive symbol of how we’ve progressed and evolved.

So, if you’re one of the lucky people who don’t have work today, now’s your chance to educate yourself on Native American culture and learn more about the origins of our nation!

Five Takeaways From The First Barnes-Johnson Debate In Wisconsin

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Democratic candidate Mandela Barnes shared the stage for the first of two scheduled debates on Friday as the candidates simultaneously tried to paint each other as extremist while going on defense on issues like crime and Social Security.

Barnes, the state lieutenant governor who has branded himself as a populist in the race, fielded attacks over the issue of crime and defunding the police. At the same time, Johnson was forced to answer questions about his previous comments on Social Security and his ties to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

Here are five takeaways from the Wisconsin Senate debate.

Mandela Barnes Has Signaled Support For Removing Police Funding And Abolishing ICE – Despite Ad Claiming Otherwise

Wisconsin Democratic Senate nominee Mandela Barnes has previously signaled his support for removing police funding and abolishing ICE, according to a review by CNN’s KFile, despite claiming otherwise in a recent ad in which he speaks directly to the camera to defend his record on those issues.

“Look, we knew the other side would make up lies about me to scare you. Now they’re claiming I want to defund the police and abolish ICE. That’s a lie,” says Barnes to the camera in a recent 30-second television ad called “Truth.”

But a CNN KFile review of Barnes’ social media activity and public comments he made in interview appearances reveal a different and more nuanced picture in which Barnes often signaled his support for such positions.

Darrell Brooks Trial: More Testimony From Witnesses

The trial continues for Darrell Brooks, the man accused of killing six people and injuring dozens more after driving an SUV through the Waukesha Christmas Parade in 2021.

Brooks will have the chance to cross-examine a Waukesha police detective during the third day of testimony on Monday.

It could be another marathon day after the jury sat through 10-hour days both Thursday and Friday.

Brooks is representing himself in his own trial, after firing his state-provided attorneys before the trial began last Monday. Today Brooks will have to provide the court with his own list of witnesses.

Wisconsinites Have A Negative View Of Sen. Ron Johnson. It May Not Hurt His Reelection Chances

Johnson's controversial approach has worn thin with some Wisconsin voters, based on years of polling by the Marquette University Law School. In recent years, a growing number of voters have held a negative view of Johnson.

But the crowd at this Union Grove rally fed off of Johnson's remarks. They cheered and jeered as Johnson attacked the Democratic Party and blamed the media for carrying their water.

In the crowd that day for Johnson's speech was Rich Strohm, a Republican living near Burlington. He said Johnson isn't "your ordinary politician," and he appreciates that the senator stands up for what he believes.

Giants Spoil Packers International Debut With 27-22 Win

Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley spoiled the Green Bay Packers' international debut.

Aaron Rodgers and the Packers set the stage by jumping out to an early lead over the New York Giants. But Jones and Barkley made the key plays in a 27-22 comeback victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday to spoil Green Bay's first regular-season game outside the United States.

"We were aware that we were underdogs in the game - you realize that but I think we're a motivated group," Jones said. "We're motivated to play for each other."

Barkley took a direct snap and ran for a 2-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to cap New York's comeback.

Rodgers then drove the Packers to the 6-yard line, but his pass on fourth-and-1 was swatted down at the line of scrimmage by safety Xavier McKinney with just over a minute left.
