BURNETT COUNTY -- A man convicted in a 2016 Burnett fatal hit-and-run has been sentenced to serve a prison term consecutive to a recent sentence of prison time that was ordered on a Sawyer County drug-related conviction.
Domminic Haugen has been sentenced to serve two consecutive prison term for his convictions in Burnett County and Sawyer County.
Haugen appeared on July 15, 2019, for a sentencing hearing on his conviction in a Burnett County fatal hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of Courtney Oustigoff. After the incident, Haugen drove his white Dodge pickup truck to his residence after striking the victim with it; cleaned up the truck, and then put animal blood to cover up the damage. Tests conducted by the Wisconsin State Crime Lab indicate that fibers were found on the undercarriage of Haugen's truck which were matched to the clothing worn by the victim, Courtney Oustigoff. Haugen also admitted that he knew he had struck a person with his truck and left the scene rather than staying to check on the person.
DrydenWire.com previously reported in October 2017 that Haugen had entered a plea of Not Guilty to his charges. Following that, at a hearing in July 2018, Haugen entered a plea of Guilty.
At Haugen’s sentencing hearing in Burnett County on July 15, 2019, the Hon. Melissia Mogen heard statements from individuals impacted by the incident and also heard joint sentencing agreement recommendations from Burnett County District Attorney Schieffer and defense counsel regarding a conviction and sentencing that Haugen received in Sawyer County Circuit Court.
Judge Mogen ordered a 20-year sentence that will run consecutive to Haugen’s 25-year sentence handed down by Judge Yackel in Sawyer County according to online circuit court records.
Haugen is to serve 10 years initial confinement followed by 10 years of extended supervision on the Burnett County fatal hit-and-run conviction. This is to be consecutive to the 15 years initial confinement and 10 years of extended supervision that Haugen received when the Hon. John Yackel sentenced Haugen on his Sawyer County drug-related convictions on July 1, 2019, according to online circuit court records.
DrydenWire.com reported in June 2018 that Haugen was facing charges in Sawyer County Circuit Court for Class C Felony Conspiracy to Distribute Methamphetamine (greater than 50 grams), Class E Felony Manufacture/Deliver Methamphetamine (greater than 3 grams, but not more than 10 grams), Class D Felony Manufacture/Deliver Methamphetamine (greater than 10 grams but not more than 50 grams), Class C Felony Manufacture/Deliver Methamphetamine (greater than 50 grams- Party to a Crime), and Class I Felony Maintain Drug Trafficking Place.
Although a jury trial had been scheduled on Haugen’s Sawyer County case, at a hearing in March 2019, Haugen plead Guilty to Class C Felony Conspiracy to Distribute Methamphetamine (greater than 50 grams). His remaining charges were dismissed but read in.
