Latin Dance Instructor Emphasizes Honor and Respect in Participation

Spooner Area Community Education Instructor Teaches Latin Dance as a Gift of Honor and Trust

News Release - Sarah Oden, Latin dance instructor and Spooner High School Media Center paraprofessional, attended college in southeast Colorado, graduated and moved east to Wisconsin a year ago. Psychology was the degree she received from college, but it was a Latin-inspired workout class, Zumba, that inspired her to pursue dance instruction.

Zumba, a combination of Latin-based dance and exercise, led to salsa dance classes, which then led to an apprenticeship under her dance instructor. Oden taught basic salsa at the beginner’s level for several years at college and in the community, with opportunities for private lessons emerging. Years of experience teaching Latin dance, special trainings, workshops with professional instructors, and attending dance conferences, especially the well-known Denver Salsa Congress, has honed her skills and love for the dance. These experiences also taught her the importance of conveying this art as a gift of honor, trust and respect.

Salsa, and other styles of dance, not only teach movement, but communication. As an instructor, Oden emphasizes the importance of body cues to move effectively and project mutual respect and safety. Good communication, such as feeling and showing respect, enhances one’s ability to learn and move with a partner increasing a more positive and enjoyable experience.
