Lakeland Family Resource Center Cancels 2020 Lake Run And Fastest Kid Race

Press Release

It is with an incredibly heavy heart that Lakeland Family Resource Center (LFRC) announces the decision to cancel their well-loved Lake Run and Fastest Kid 2020 events. With COVID-19 risks, and the community’s health and safety as a top concern, LFRC made the difficult decision to cancel one of the non-profit’s largest events of the year.

“We have added so many elements to Lake Run and Fastest Kid Race over the past couple of years, from concessions to a bouncy house, our team felt it would be unfair to host the event without giving participants and families the full experience,” said Executive Director, Renee Luell.

Lakeland Family Resource Center’s team is not letting COVID-19 dampen their community involvement and plans to make Lake Run and Fastest Kid Race 2021 even better than before! Amidst the pandemic, LFRC extended services to be on call seven days a week from 9am-5pm, offering services and assistance to community members. They leapt right into action by applying for, and being awarded, a grant for their BOOST Initiative to help families throughout COVID-19, who are facing barriers and financial hardship. Various staff members had a great deal of involvement with Community First Washburn County by delivering meals, assisting in managing media outlets, staffing the call center, packaging essential needs bags, purchasing essential needs products locally and many other local services. The ever-loved LFRC Playgroup went from in person to online Facebook Live story time, to interactive Zoom meetings and recently adapted to hands-on Playgroup at Home kit to give families free activities very similar to what was offered in the center prior to COVID-19. Check out Lakeland’s website and Facebook to see all the adaptations and supports this unique family service center is offering everyone in our community. From grandparents and parents to those just needing a BOOST, Lakeland has you covered!

With that being said, Lake Run was Lakeland’s largest fundraising event of the year. The cancellation decision was an incredibly difficult one to make and will impact the LFRC budget, however, health and safety of the community is not something to be taken lightly. Lakeland Family Resource Center is your resource center and has stepped up to continue services through this incredibly difficult time at hand. If you are able to offer support and assistance in return, LFRC would be ever-grateful.

“We will persevere through these unknown times of hardship and the most important thing we can all do is to support one another through the struggle,” Luell remarks.
