Kids’ Fishing Derby Set For June 1 At Rice Lake

RICE LAKE, WI -- Members of the Rice Lake Area Men’s Club will play host to children ages 12-under at the 38th annual free Kids’ Fishing Derby from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, June 1, 2024, on the west shore of Rice Lake.

One of the kickoff events for the Aquafest celebration, the derby will begin with signups at the Veterans Memorial Park bandshell.

Registered participants will be given a T-shirt, a box of wax worms and a fishing jig, all while supplies last. Kids who catch fish will be awarded coupons for treats and food by Men’s Club members, who will be stationed along the shoreline.

In addition, all registered children are eligible for prize drawings at the conclusion of the derby, including bicycles and helmets, fishing poles, tackle boxes, scooters and other prizes.

Young anglers are also invited to hone their fishing skills in a club-sponsored casting contest.

Men’s Club members will serve hot dogs, chips, root beer and water, each priced at 25 cents. The Rice Lake Public Library will provide sweet treats.

Formed as an independent organization in 1984 from what had been an Optimist Club, the Rice Lake Area Men’s Club is dedicated to serving youth, primarily in the communities of Rice Lake, Birchwood, Cameron and Chetek.

The club has sponsored the Kids’ Fishing Derby for many years. Although the origin of the derby isn’t certain, club members say that parents and other adults approach them to tell stories about how they participated in the derby when they were kids.

The Club meets at 7 a.m. each Tuesday at Stevie’s Restaurant, Rice Lake.
