MADISON – During Thursday’s Assembly floor session, the State Assembly approved Senate Bill (SB) 416 authored by Representative James Edming (R-Glen Flora) and Senator Patrick Testin (R-Stevens Point). This bill eliminates unnecessary red tape from the state grant program that helps fund Wisconsin’s county veteran service offices.
“Our county veterans service offices play an important role in educating our veterans on the benefits they are entitled to and helping them access these benefits,” said Rep. Edming. “Getting unnecessary red tape out of their way will make it easier for them to perform this important mission.”
Currently, all new county veteran service officers must pass a civil service exam in order for their county to be eligible for a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs to help fund county veteran services. SB 416 eliminates this requirement.
“The civil service exam that county veteran service officers must take covers very little of the job duties that they actually perform,” said Rep. Edming. “Eliminating this unnecessary hurdle will make it easier for counties to obtain funding that helps them serve our veterans.”
With bipartisan approval by the legislature, SB 416 now heads to Governor Evers’ desk.
The 87th Assembly District includes all or portions of Marathon, Rusk, Sawyer, and Taylor Counties.
