It’s 11:00 pm and you’re driving home in a rain storm, when your car hydroplanes and skids out of control. Seconds later, you realize your trapped in your vehicle which has flipped on its top and is lying in the ditch. You dial 911 and first responders are quickly alerted. But who are first responders?
In Barron County, just like many rural communities, first responders are volunteers who have dedicated their lives toward helping those in need. These volunteers are custodians, office workers, foresters, social workers, salesman, students, farmers, and the list continues… They are men and women who are committed to helping neighbors and who continually learn new life-saving skills to make a difference in their communities.
Additional volunteers are currently needed to meet the need for emergency services. On Friday, September 30th, first responders in Barron County met for a group photo to increase awareness and promote volunteerism within the local first responder community, with a campaign title of "REAL HEROES DON'T WEAR CAPES".
“As life continues to demand more of our time, we’re seeing a decline in volunteers within the emergency response profession. Our goal is to attract more individuals to serve on their local fire department or first responder organization. From gaining experience and learning new life skills, to being a part of a team and having that sense of brotherhood - the rewards are incredible. It truly is a family.”
For those interested in volunteering as a first responder within their community, contact Mike Judy at the Barron County Sheriff’s Department (715-637-6732) for more information.
