Congrats to Spooner High School Athlete Garett Borelli

Congrats to Spooner High School Athlete Garett Borelli

On Saturday, January 21, 2017, Garett Borelli had a great day as the first Spooner High School Rail athlete to qualify, and compete, at the Wisconsin Coaches Series State JV Wrestling Tournament, in Wausau, WI. Garett, the son of Kristy Leckel, wrestled in the 195 lb. weight class.

116 schools from all over the state of Wisconsin competed in 566 matches on eight mats, in a single divisional state tournament.  Garett made his family, Spooner High School and coaches proud going 3-1 on the day, winning his consolation bracket, and finishing in the top eight athletes in his weight class.  Garrett lost his first match of the day to Brody Schiedermaye of Kaukauna.  This placed Garrett in the consolation bracket, forcing him to win every match, or his day would be cut short.  He did so, wrestling bravely to win his next three matches.  In his second match, he came from a 0-4 deficit to pin Robert Noble of Milwaukee Marshall in the second period.  Garrett’s third match was a nail-biter winning a decision 2-0 over Kristofe Runnheim of Little Chute.

The consolation championship turned into a physical struggle. In the second period with the score tied 0-0, a scramble occurred from both wrestlers feet.  A short offensive attack ended with a takedown and Garrett pinning Terry Hrubes of Riverdale and a top 8 finish.

Garrett was coached by Rails JV Coach David Parish.
