Brian Cole: 'Easter Vs. Resurrection Sunday'

The Bunny vs. Jesus, what are you teaching your children?

Mark 15:33-39 – “At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And at three in the afternoon, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? (which means “My God my God, why have you forsaken me?”). When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, He’s calling Elijah.” Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave Him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take Him down,” he said. With a loud cry, Jesus breathed His last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how He died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God.”

As we teach our kids about the cute little Easter bunny we neglect the reality of the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. As you paint the eggs with bright colors, you neglect to realize the darkness which covered the land for 3 hours that was God’s holy, terrifying presence as He descended in Judgment on Golgotha in thick gloom as the divine executioner who was about to unleash His fury, not against sinners, but against the sin-bearer!

1 Peter 2:24 – “He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness, by his wounds you have been healed.”

The full weight of God’s wrath was poured out on the Son of God: Isa. 53:5 – But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed.”

The spotless lamb of God was sacrificed for sin that sinners might be justified through Him: 2 Cor. 5:21 – “God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Heb. 9:28 – “So Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him.”

As you have your children seek out hidden eggs and neglect to teach them to seek Jesus, you are sentencing them to experience the righteous wrath of God which Jesus took for us. While you gift them with baskets of candy, you neglect to teach them about the free gift Jesus offers each and every one of us – the free gift of salvation. The gift is that He took upon Himself the wrath for our sins that each and every one of us deserve.

Why did He do it? FOR YOU! FOR ME! FOR US! Jesus was forsaken so that we would never have to be! The judgment that should have fallen on us fell instead on Jesus!

As our children tear into their candy, upon Jesus death the Veil in the sanctuary was torn from Top to bottom. This was God saying: “This is the sacrifice that ends all sacrifices, the way is open now to approach me!” Now that Jesus has died, anyone who believes in Him can see God and connect to God. Anyone who believes can go in now! Are you ready to enter?

Even the Centurion understood the man on the cross was the Son of God. Do your children know the Son of God? They sure know the bunny! The bunny will lead them to experience God’s wrath. Only in Jesus do we have salvation and redemption. You, as their parents, are responsible for their future. What are you teaching them? Do you know Jesus!!?? Today is the day. John 14:6 – “I am the way, the truth and life. No one comes to the Father but through me.” Jer. 33:3 – “Call unto me and I will answer you…”
