Weekly Northwest Region Construction Update

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is providing a weekly update on construction projects in the northwest region, which includes the counties of Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Buffalo, Burnett, Chippewa, Clark, Douglas, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, Rusk, Sawyer, St. Croix, Taylor, Trempealeau and Washburn counties.

Construction-related traffic impacts are subject to change and dependent on favorable weather patterns.


Ashland County (COMPLETE)

Highway: WIS 118 and WIS 112 

  • Location: Benoit through WIS 112, from Ashland Bayfield Road to WIS 112 and Marengo, WIS 118 to US 2
  • Schedule: July 29 to October 2019
  • Cost: $2.9 million
  • Description: Resurfacing project including improvements to shoulders, curb and gutter, sidewalk, pedestrian signals, rumble strip installation, signing and pavement marking.

Bayfield County

Highway: WIS 13

  • Location: Tewilliger Creek Bridge
  • Schedule: Aug. 5 to November 2019
  • Cost: $808,000
  • Description: Bridge replacement project and resurfacing project including curb and gutter improvements/pavement marking.
  • Traffic Impacts: WIS 13 will be open with shoulder closure.

Bayfield and Sawyer counties (COMPLETE)

Highway: US 63

  • Location: County M and Larsen Road, near Seeley and Cable
  • Schedule: July 8 to October 2019
  • Cost: $3.8 million
  • Description: Resurfacing project including signing, pavement marking and beam guard installation. Three culvert pipes and gutter and storm sewer will be replaced in Seeley.

Buffalo County

Highway: WIS 35

  • Location: Mississippi River Tributary bridges, Trempealeau to Fountain City
  • Schedule: April 25 to November 2019
  • Cost: $2.8 million
  • Description: Bridge replacement and resurfacing project including beam guard placement and concrete restoration.
  • Traffic Impacts: Traffic is being controlled via temporary traffic signals for the area undergoing slope repair.

Clark County

Highway: Mill Road

  • Location: Nelson Creek Bridge, town of Beaver.
  • Schedule: Sept. 23 to November 2019.
  • Cost: $2.8 million
  • Description: Bridge replacement project.
  • Traffic Impacts: Mill Road is closed to through traffic, and there is no detour route.

Douglas County

Local Road: Johnson Road

  • Location: County Y to Johnson Road intersection, town of Gordon
  • Schedule: Sept. 16 to November 2019
  • Cost: $330,000
  • Description: Bridge replacement and resurfacing project.
  • Traffic Impacts: Local alternative routes are available, but there is no posted detour.

Dunn County

Highway: I-94

  • Location: 250th Street to Wilson Creek, west of Menomonie
  • Schedule: Spring 2018 to November 2019
  • Cost: $30.3 million
  • Description: Bridge replacement and resurfacing project including pavement marking, signing, fencing, median cable barrier and beam guard installation.
  • Traffic impacts: East- and westbound I-94 traffic is running on the newly constructed lanes. Two lanes should be open at most times, with single-lane closures during off-peak times.
    • The speed limit on I-94 remains reduced to 60 mph in either direction throughout the project.
    • Intermittent flagging operations are taking place at 390th Street, 650th Avenue, 250th Street and County K.

Dunn and St. Croix counties

Highway: I-94

  • Location: Between Hudson and Menomonie near Knapp
  • Schedule: March 25, 2019 to November 2020
  • Cost: $57.5 million
  • Description: Resurfacing project including utility relocation.
  • Traffic impacts: East- and westbound lane closures are in effect on I-94 from WIS 128 to 160th Street.

Pepin County

Highway: WIS 85

  • Location: US 10 in Durand to Pepin-Dunn county line
  • Schedule: Sept. 9 to November 2019
  • Cost: $4.1 million
  • Description: Resurfacing project.
  • Traffic impacts: There are intermittent single-lane closures with flagging operations.

Pierce County

Highway: WIS 35

  • Location: US 63 to Coulee Creek, Hager City to Prescott
  • Schedule: July 16 to November 2019
  • Cost: $6.6 million
  • Description: Resurfacing project including guard rail installation and pavement marking.
  • Traffic Impacts: There will be single-lane closures with flaggers.

Rusk County

Highway: WIS 40

  • Location: Chippewa-Rusk County line to US 8, between Bloomer and Bruce
  • Schedule: Aug. 5 to November 2019
  • Cost: $4.8 million
  • Description: Resurfacing project including pavement marking and signing.
  • Traffic Impacts: There will be single-lane closures with flaggers.

St. Croix County

Highway: I-94

  • Location: 130th St. and Kinnickinnic River bridges, between Hudson and Baldwin
  • Schedule: April 1, 2018 to July 2020
  • Cost: $17 million
  • Description: Bridge replacement project for four structures including roughly two miles of approach work. 
  • Traffic Impacts: The speed limit is reduced from 70 mph to 60 mph when a lane of westbound I-94 is closed. Eastbound traffic is using a temporary road with a posted speed limit of 60 mph at all times.

Highway: US 12 

  • Location: Baldwin to Menomonie
  • Schedule: Aug. 5 to November 2019
  • Cost: $1 million
  • Description: Bridge replacement of the Dry Run Bridge.
  • Traffic Impacts: A detour is in place to reroute US 12 to I-94 via WIS 128 and US 63.

Sawyer County

Highway: WIS 27

  • Location: City of Hayward
  • Schedule: Sept. 3 to November 2019
  • Cost: $4 million
  • Description: Construction during the second stage of the project will occur between the Namekagon River Bridge and Michigan Avenue. The County B intersection will be reconstructed with new signals, storm sewer and pavement, and traffic signals.
  • Traffic Impacts: Truck traffic on County B is detoured utilizing WIS 27, WIS 77 and County K. Traffic on WIS 27 is reduced to one lane in each direction.

Taylor County

Highway: County M

  • Location: Yellow River Bridge between WIS 73 and Perkinstown
  • Schedule: Sept. 3 to October 2019
  • Cost: $557,000
  • Description: Bridge replacement of the Yellow River Bridge.
  • Traffic Impacts: County M is closed with a detour.

Highway: State Street

  • Location: Medford
  • Schedule: Sept. 3 to November 2019
  • Cost: $830,000
  • Description: Replacement of Black River Bridge.
  • Traffic Impacts: The bridge is out, and State Street is closed to through traffic.

Trempealeau County

Highway: WIS 54

  • Location: US 53 to east county line, Galesville to North Bend
  • Schedule: July 15 to November 2019
  • Cost: $4.2 million
  • Description: Resurfacing project including culvert replacement, pipe lining, subgrade improvements, guardrail installation, new permanent signing and pavement marking.
  • Traffic Impacts: WIS 54 is open to traffic under flagging operations.

Highway: I-94

  • Location: Eau Claire to Osseo
  • Schedule: April 9, 2019 to October 2020
  • Cost: $10 million
  • Description: Bridge replacement and resurfacing project including beam guard installation, pavement marking, signing and fencing.
  • Traffic Impacts: Westbound traffic continues to utilize the temporary lanes built in the median.
    • The westbound I-94 driving lane is closed from 8 p.m. Sundays to 11 a.m. Fridays.
    • The eastbound I-94 passing lane is closed from 8 p.m. Sundays to 10 a.m. Fridays until mid-November.

Washburn County

Highway: US 63

  • Location: Green Valley Road to Greenwood Avenue, Poplar Street to US 53, city of Spooner
  • Schedule: Aug. 12 to October 2019
  • Cost: $3.8 million
  • Description: Resurfacing project including curb and gutter replacement, signing and pavement marking.
  • Traffic Impacts: Work is being performed under daily flagging operations.
