CUMBERLAND, WI -- The small town of Cumberland got some big news last night. A winning $1,000,000 Powerball ticket was sold at Cumberland Cenex on 2104 Carlone St. for the Wednesday, January 24 drawing. The winning ticket matched five of five numbers (1-5-32-50-64) but missed the Powerball (8). It is the first million-dollar Powerball win of 2024 for Wisconsin.
"Our store has only been open three years," said Vernita Craine, store manager. "This is our biggest win ever. It's very exciting."
Often called the Island City, several online sources list Cumberland's population as 2,268, ranking it the 231st most populated city in Wisconsin.
"We can't wait to find out who it is. Hopefully someone local," added Craine.
Wisconsin Lottery retailers who sell winning tickets over $599 receive a two percent Retailer Performance Winning Ticket Incentive, up to $100,000. Cumberland Cenex will receive $20,000 as part of the incentive program.
"The incentive is great for our small store. It's very helpful to us," said Craine.
Players have 180 days from the draw date to claim their winnings.
The odds of winning a $1 million Powerball prize are 1:11,688,054. The next Powerball drawing is on Saturday with an estimated jackpot of $164 million. The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1:292,201,338.
Powerball drawings are Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 9:59 p.m. Tickets must be purchased before 9 p.m. to be included in a drawing. Powerball tickets are $2 per play, with the option to buy the Power Play feature for an additional dollar.
